Covid-19 and St. George's

Due to the current situation with Covid-19 there has been a major increase in workload for NHS staff, including those working at St. George's. We receive daily updates from NHS England and Public Health England advising us what needs to be done to align ourself with national guidelines.

Such advice is likely to have more of an impact on how patients access GP services. For example a current NHS England requirement is to stop all online appointments.

As the situation progresses there may be a time where we will not allow any patients to St. George's without clearance to visit beforehand. In addition it may mean that GP/nurse/pharmacist appointments are done over the phone, or electronically. Staff at St. George's may want to contact you by other means too (e.g. SMS text messaging, Patient Access secure messaging, or email). It is very important we have your up-to-date mobile phone number and email address.

If you have not done so already please obtain your online login information from reception. You should also sign up to the Electronic Prescription Service by visiting your preferred pharmacy.

Please check our website regularly for information about any changes we may make to comply with national guidelines.

For the latest information about Covid-19 always refer to the NHS website (www.nhs.uk). Please be wary of misinformation and 'anecdotes' on social media.

26/03/20 Update - To comply with the latest guidance St. George's Medical Centre will be closed to visitors until further notice. We will see patients by invitation only. Any visitor to St. George's will be turned away unless they have been expressly invited to attend by a clinician.

Patients can contact us by phone, email (stgeorges@nhs.net), and via Patient Access app secure messaging (it's very good!). We will perform telephone consultations and where possible video consultations.

EMPLOYMENT AND SUPPORT ALLOWANCE

The Government has promised that if you are sick or have been advised to self-isolate, you will be able to claim Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) from day one instead of day eight.

You can make a claim for new style Employment and Support Allowance on the Government's website. You will need to fill in a NSESAF1 claim form to apply.

The weekly payment for ESA is typically £73.10 or £57.90 for people under the age of 25.


UNIVERSAL CREDIT

For now the Government have relaxed the minimum income floor and have raised the payments for Universal Credit so self-employed individuals receive the same amount as someone on statutory sick pay, or £94.25 a week.

If you need to claim Universal Credit, but have COVID-19 or are self-isolating, you will now be able to make a claim and to access advance payments without needing to attend a Jobcentre Plus.

Unfortunately, the five week wait for new Universal Credit claims remains though. 


Prescribing of over the counter medicines is changing

Your GP, nurse or pharmacist will not generally give you a prescription for certain medicines that are available to buy in a pharmacy or supermarket, even if you qualify for free prescriptions.

Instead, over the counter medicines are available to buy in a pharmacy or supermarket.

Patient Survey - Awareness of Cancer

Barnet Council are doing a survey to find out about Barnet residents’ awareness of cancer signs and symptoms. The survey link can be found here.

They want to know how aware Barnet residents are about cancer: prevention, common symptoms, and importance of screening. Based on what you say, an information campaign will be launched in Barnet to improve awareness and promote healthy living to help prevent cancer.

The Cancer Awareness survey closes on 29 February 2020.


Department for Work & Pensions (DWP)

We are delighted to team up with the local DWP team to help patients get back into work. They are available on the first Friday of every month to be seen at St. George's Medical Centre. For an appointment please ask at reception.


Macmillan Cancer Support Cake Sale

Thank you for all that supported our cake sale on Friday 27th September. There were some 'exceedingly good' cakes.

Research on Antidepressants

St. George's Medical Centre are delighted to have been involved with some research on the use of antidepressants in Primary Care. This research has been published in The Lancet.


Blood Tests

As of the 1st April 2019 St. George's Medical Centre are unable to offer blood tests onsite.

Should you need a blood test please refer to the Royal Free Hospital NHS Foundation Trust's website for locations where you can have your test done.

Practice Health Champions

We are delighted to welcome our Practice Health Champions to St. George's. They are here to help both St. George's and our patients, and do so on a voluntary basis. Your Named GP

All patients (including children) have been allocated a named, accountable GP. However you're welcome to book appointments with whichever doctor/nurse you wish.


Pan Barnet Data Sharing Agreement

Barnet CCG is investing in a pilot scheme that will allow patients to be seen on Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evening. This means there will be more opportunity for you to see a local GP out of hours at another local GP practice.

In order to participate in this, we are part of a data sharing agreement with other local practices in Barnet.

If you have an appointment booked as part of this pilot your consent will be required for the GP to view your practice notes. This will be requested during your consultation.

Should you not wish for your notes to be part of this data sharing agreement please inform our Practice Manager (Mr Riz Husain) in writing.


Replacement Blood Forms

Please note that as of the 1st September 2015 we will be unable to provide free replacements for blood forms that have been lost, forgotten or misplaced.

If you require a copy of a blood form you were previously given a charge of 50p will apply per copy.
