NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (Covid-19) - Important information

From 13/03/20 the public are being advised to stay at home (self-isolate) without any testing for COVID-19, regardless of travel history or contact with confirmed cases, if they have:

a. A new continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

OR

b. High temperature (of 37.8 degrees centigrade or higher) – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

OR

c. Loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Anyone with the above symptoms should stay at home and use the NHS 111 online service at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus to find out what to do next. Please do not go to any GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. 

As guidance from NHS England adapts to help contain the threat of Covid-19, processes at St. George's will be adapting to comply with NHS England requirements. For the latest information regarding how access to your GP services will change please check our website regularly for updates (both here and on the News page).

To comply with current requirements St. George's Medical Centre is open but the doors will be kept closed. You will need to knock/buzz for attention. Where possible please avoid attending the practice; use Patient Access secure messaging and email where possible, as phone lines are very busy.

We aim to use telephone and video consultations where possible. For video consultations you may be asked to install the Whereby app on your smartphone (available on Google Play and the App Store). Your doctor will determine if you need to be seen face-to-face and if required you will be invited to attend at an appropriate time. Please be reassured that the majority of issues can be successfully dealt with via phone/video consultation.

Please note that current NHS England guidelines require online appointment booking to be suspended until further notice.

Staff at St. George's may want to contact you by phone, SMS text messaging, Patient Access secure messaging, or email. It is very important we have your up-to-date mobile phone number and email address.

If you have not done so already please obtain your online login information from reception. Email us at stgeorges@nhs.net. We will call you to confirm (for security reasons) and reply to your email with your login details.

You should also sign up to the Electronic Prescription Service by asking your preferred pharmacy to set you up. Once this is done your doctor can electronically send your prescriptions direct to your chosen pharmacy, so you don't have to come to St. George's.

Repeat prescriptions can be requested via the Patient Access app (preferred), or by dropping a request through our letterbox.

Due to the current pandemic and pressure on General Practice, we are prioritising the urgent medical needs of our patients and will not be providing a medical certificate for Covid-19. Should your employer require your absence to be confirmed in writing please go to the NHS111 website.

Number of appointments in March 2020 where patients did not attend = 174 (costing the NHS £3,190 and wasting 29 hours of GP time). On average that's 8 appointments per day wasted, when other sick patients could have been seen!
